Sofia is welcoming new, revolutionary Institute for Computer Science, AI and Technology

The official ceremony of INSAIT (Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology) launching was recently held in the Bulgarian National Palace of Culture in Sofia. 

The launch of a new artificial intelligence and computer science research institute in Sofia is intended to boost the country’s credentials as a science and technology hub in South Eastern Europe.

Nowadays, new technologies are being discovered all the time. Openings of new institutes are an important part of the revolution of knowledge of these technologies. Artificial intelligence technology enables human capabilities such as understanding, reasoning, planning, communication and perception. INSAIT will surely become a place where new revelations are found.

The city of Sofia, led by mayor Yordanka Fandakova, welcomes the first AI institute in SEE which will help the country to grow the scientific community, attract, develop, and retain local and international research talent, as well as accelerate the economic and social innovation impact in the region. 

 The institute will be part of the Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski. It was created in partnership with ETH Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).

This project is also supported by many giants in the industry including Amazon and Google which are helping with the funding of the project but also with their vast knowledge and overall support.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said the government is putting $100 million into the Institute and Tech companies Google, DeepMind, Amazon, and SiteGround announced an additional $10.5 million of investment. Bulgarian entrepreneurs will invest another $600,000. This is the first European institute to attract this level of investments from governments and companies. 

The center will host research and education programs in artificial intelligence, computer science, machine learning, computer vision, information security, and quantum computing. Also, one of the main aims of this project is to quickly attract world-class faculty to train the next generation of experts in these fields. (photo credit: Bulgarian Government)
