Seville has presented plans to decarbonise public transport worth approximately EUR 44 million.

Mayor of Seville Antonio Muñoz stressed that the city’s strategy focuses on promotion of public transport and making it greener and more accessible.

As part of the strategy, Seville is strengthening its public transport fleet with electric vehicles and introducing new lines to reach more residents.

Muñoz stressed that city authorities want to build a large public transport network combining trams, buses and metro and rail lines, among other. He pointed out that the move will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

City authorities noted that more than 100,000 residents have free access to public transport, including minors, the unemployed, the elderly and the disabled, while prices are reduced for other social groups.

Seville pointed out that approximately 30% of trips are subsidised to some extent and reminded that prices in public transport were cut nearly one third in the second half of 2022.

Muñoz noted that the city’s bus fleet has largely switched to natural gas and hybrid drives, with Seville committed to replacing the remaining polluting buses with natural gas and electric vehicles.

He added that the municipal power utility is expanding the network of charging stations to meet the needs of the electric bus fleet, with ten charging points up and running, and additional 23 to come online this year.
