Saint-Étienne receives recognition for artistic and cultural education
Saint-Étienne has received the “100% artistic and cultural education” label from regional authorities.
Mayor of Saint-Étienne Gaël Perdriau pointed out “culture is a common good which we have a duty to make accessible to as many young people as possible.”
He stressed the importance of starting at a young age and noted that Saint-Étienne is doing just that.
Councillor for culture Marc Chassaubéné added “we are convinced that artistic and cultural education plays a role in growth of citizens.”
He expressed belief that exposure to culture builds self-confidence and awareness in children and concluded that art and education should be integrated “in all places and at all times.”
City authorities stressed that the label reflects cultural authorities’ recognition of Saint-Étienne’s commitment to development of art and culture in sustainable and inclusive manner.
Besides investing in artistic and cultural education of children, city authorities announced plans to develop projects aimed at vulnerable groups including the elderly and people with disabilities.
Saint-Étienne concluded that projects implemented thus far show that participatory culture is very successful when it is made accessible, pointing to the recent intergenerational art project carried out in cooperation with residents of Chavanelle and Balaÿ neighbourhoods.
