Rennes invites residents to join urban farming initiative

Rennes is promoting its urban agriculture project, pointing out that participation is growing.

Headed by Mayor of Rennes Nathalie Appéré, city authorities noted that the project has positive effects on public health, ecology and the economy.

Participants have an opportunity to learn and take part in production of agricultural products as well as cultivate social ties, with Rennes inviting residents to join the urban farming initiative.

City authorities pointed out that Quincé urban garden in Beauregard district produces vegetables for a local restaurant and serves as a location for holding cultural events, stressing that it is connected with footpaths and cycle lanes.

Rennes noted that in 2019, more than 1,500 children and 1,000 adults took part in activities organised at the Jardin des Mille Pas, which helped to promote urban agriculture and raise awareness about ecological issues.

City authorities stressed that the garden covers an area of 1.3 hectares, making the municipality greener and improving soil permeability in the area.

In the garden, some areas are cultivated intensively while other parts are barely maintained at all, which helps in education courses and provides an example of a broad range of farming systems.

The garden hosts festivals and other social events in addition to education courses.
