Nuremberg launches green project to renovate public bath

Nuremberg has launched a green project to renovate the Volksbad, the building housing the city’s public bath.

Headed by Lord Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König, the city council approved the project at the end of 2020, with state authorities approving funding for the project in March 2022.

Nuremberg authorities pointed out that the project is worth more than EUR 18 million and is to be completed by the end of 2024, adding that it will be the city’s first project where recycled concrete will be used.

The move will protect natural gravel deposits by using concrete rubble as a construction material. Nuremberg pointed out that recycled concrete is rarely used in Germany.

Nearly 85% of reinforced concrete components in the project will be made with recycled concrete, improving sustainability and saving resources.

City authorities noted that the public bath will be transformed into an indoor pool, stressing that this will require little intervention as the building was constructed for this purpose.

Besides using recycled concrete, the project will use cement made with a lower carbon footprint, with city authorities reminding that production of cement is a large contributor to total greenhouse gas emissions.

Nuremberg concluded that it will continue to pursue sustainability and energy efficiency in future projects.
