Nuremberg approves draft urban development plan to lower housing market pressure
Nuremberg has approved a draft urban development plan to lower pressure on the housing market in the southwest of the city.
Lord Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König pointed out that the new plan “offers great recreational and social value for the district.”
As part of the plan, the city will repurpose the land on which the disused velodrome was built to allow a private buyer to develop the area.
The investor will build apartments and a day-care centre, with city authorities noting that the development plan is in line with Nuremberg’s environmental and social goals.
The project includes construction of approximately 220 residential units, of which subsidised social housing will account for nearly one quarter.
Councillor for planning and construction Daniel F. Ulrich noted that the area will have access to an underground car park and will be car-free, adding that plans include construction of cycle paths.
Elisabeth Ries, councillor for youth and social affairs, pointed out that the investor initially planned to build a day-care centre for approximately 40 children, which city authorities upped to nearly 100.
She added that the new neighbourhood will have a space for cultural and social events, which will offer significant added value.
The neighbourhood will boast a central green area and play areas that will be open to the public, with city authorities stressing that any trees felled during construction will be replaced.
