New sustainable urban project planned in Nuremberg
The project known as The Global Field (Welt Acker) may soon be coming to the German city of Nuremberg. This innovative urban space concept is based on a premise that basic things humans need can be grown on a field as large as 2000 square meters.
Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König stated on social media: ‘’If you add up all the arable land in the world and divide it by the number of people, you get about 2,000 square meters. In theory, it should be possible to grow everything we need in this field – food, but also cotton for clothing, for example.’’
According to mayor König, this initiative ultimately aims to raise awareness about how people can use resources and land in a responsible way. If the city planning committee approves the project, the new Golden Field will be built at Nuremberg’s Westpark.
‘’A fair distribution of resources and thus conscious handling of nature and raw materials as well as the pursuit of sustainability goals have a high priority in Nuremberg as a city of human rights. Through the Global Field, these topics can be experienced in the middle of urban space,’’ mayor König further stated.
In addition to the 2,000 square meters intended for growing plants, an area of 500 square meters would also be included in the project. It would be used for the other necessary facilities such as a storage house, supply routes, training points and a meeting place for visitors.
Innovation and Future Foundation is set to run this project together with the association Bluepingu e. V, which promotes environmental protection and nature conservation, as well as socio-ecological change. Furthermore, the project will also be scientifically supported by the Nuremberg Institute of Technology Georg Simon Ohm (Technische Hochschule Nürnberg).
The next steps regarding this innovative project will be discussed at the meeting of the Urban Planning Committee on February 17th.(photo credit: Jonathan Wolf/Unsplash)
