New environmentally friendly school in Cologne will use geothermal energy, heat pumps and solar

Cologne has launched an environmentally friendly school project, noting that the new school will boast a modern sports hall.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker stressed that the new school will be based on the passive house standard and in line with highest environmental standards.

It will use geothermal energy, heat pumps and solar panels to keep its energy requirements to a minimum and be as environmentally friendly as possible.

City authorities pointed out that the plot of land in question is relatively small for a school – just under 4,500 square metres – which is why the sports hall will be built in the basement and the ground floor.

The school will also boast a green roof, an outdoor play area and a green classroom, with city authorities noting that new trees and other greenery will be planted as part of the project.

Cologne stressed that the school will not open directly to the busy Friedrich-Karl Street and will have barrier-free access via pedestrian and cycling paths.

The school will be accessible for people with disabilities and a separate entrance will be built for school staff and external users of the sports hall.

The project is worth approximately EUR 32.5 million and is to be completed by the summer of 2025, with Cologne reminding that city authorities approved the project in November last year.
