Naples has submitted its candidacy for European Capital of Sports 2026, noting that it continues to invest in sports.

“Sport is fundamental in the life of a community,” Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi pointed out and noted that it is important in socialisation and growth of children and their families.

He stressed the importance of working together with state and regional authorities to invest in sports facilities and make sure that all children and young people have access to sports.

Manfredi expressed belief that becoming European Capital of Sports 2026 would have positive effects on sports tourism and culture in Naples.

It would help the city to attract national and international sporting events, and invest more in promotion of sports and relevant infrastructure.

Councillor for sport Emanuela Ferrante pointed out that the city is focused on sport “not only for its social and educational value,” but also to develop specialised and quality tourism.

“We are determined to relaunch the city from the point of view of sport,” she stressed and added that Naples has the potential to become European Capital of Sports 2026, which would help it to attract tourists and sporting events, and invest more in sports.

Ferrante concluded that the recognition would incentivise Naples to put sports at the centre of its strategic decisions.
