Naples starts new hiring drive to better absorb EU funds and implement new projects

Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi noted in November that the city is increasing hiring to better absorb EU funds and implement planned projects.

He pointed out that the city improved absorption of EU funds compared to recent years, but needs to step up its efforts to make sure deadlines are met and investment opportunities seized.

As part of its efforts, Naples adopted rules to speed up verification, approval and implementation of projects financed through EU funds.

“We come from past experiences in which many funds were lost due to problems related to tenders, errors made in planning and non-optimal management of time with respect to funding deadlines,” Manfredi stressed.

He expressed hope that Naples’ efforts to boost the city administration’s capacity to process projects will help it to implement projects in timely manner, pointing out that all departments are involved. These efforts include new hiring and the adoption of a new framework for processing projects.

Naples pointed out that the new framework will help the city to implement projects focused on repurposing of buildings, restoration of cultural assets, infrastructural interventions and environmental issues, among other.

The city concluded that new approach will help it to complete projects that are currently underway as well as projects planned for the coming period.
