Mayor Tschentscher wants to make Hamburg port the world’s most sustainable one
Mayor of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher recently revealed new plans for the city’s port. The guidelines for a new development plan were presented to the Übersee-Club, an association for promoting the exchange of business and science, Welt reported.
Mayor Tschentscher stated: “Our goal is not to become the largest port in Europe, our goal is to become the most modern, the most digital and the most sustainable port in the world.”
“The central goal of the new port policy is to keep Hamburg a large, efficient universal port and thus to ensure Germany, independently of other countries, good and flexible access to the world market,” mayor of Hamburg also stated in his speech.
This year, the Senate intends to present the new port development plan. According to mayor Tschentscher, the port is not only indispensable for Hamburg but also has ‘’the greatest national importance”. The gross added value associated with the port amounts to over 50 billion euro on a national level.
“More than 600,000 jobs in Germany are related to the Port of Hamburg, around 68,000 of them in Hamburg,” said mayor of Hamburg. “With a strategically clever port policy, we are securing the basis for added value, prosperity, and employment in Hamburg and throughout Germany.”
The Port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest seaport, is located between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is not only northern Europe’s most important transport hub but also a critical component of Germany’s and Europe’s trade.
According to Tschentscher, the port of Hamburg can play an important role in advancing the energy transition, climate and environmental protection and securing jobs. In addition, it can help ensure Germany’s supply even in times of crisis, and strengthen innovations and future technologies in Hamburg. (photo credit: Wikimedia)
