Mayor of Gijón is a true fighter for gender equality

Ana González Rodríguez is a Spanish politician who has been serving as mayor of Gijón since 2019.

She was born in Oviedo in 1963 and developed her interest for philology since early ages. At the University, mayor of Gijón specialized in Hispanic Philology and Hispano-American Literature.

After her academic development, Ana González started her career as a teacher of Spanish for foreigners. She later worked at a local high school. All of this led to her appointment as professor at IES Universidad Laboral in 2011.

Besides her regular job, she served as a civil servant from 2001. During her time in this position, she was a training advisor at the Center for Teachers and Resources of Northwest. Her successes were visible, which led to her appointment as head of the department called Service for equal opportunities between men and women, in 2001. This department was part of the Asturian Institute for Women.

Her first major political function was advisor, later director, in the cabinet of the Ministry for Equality. There, mayor of Gijón developed a basis and started to climb towards the position of mayor. She was later named as councilor in the City Council of Gijón, were her accomplishments started truly shining. Soon after, she was elected as one of the Spanish delegates for the European Institute for Gender Equality, also known as EIGE.

Her two biggest positions, prior to her election as mayor of Gijón, were  Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of the Principality of Asturias, from 2012 to 2015 and Secretary of Equality, from 2015 to 2019.All of the work done by Ana González, led to her victory for the position of mayor in municipal elections in 2019.
