Malmö supports metro connection to Copenhagen
Malmö noted that it supports a metro connection to Copenhagen and is willing to co-finance an environmental impact study for the project.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh pointed out that the city is willing to cover the costs of the study on the Danish side.
The proposed Øresundsmetro link would complement the existing Øresund heavy rail line between Denmark and Sweden.
Malmö pointed out that Copenhagen is thinking about the project and reiterated that it is willing to cover part of the cost of an environmental impact study required to approve the metro connection.
Copenhagen is to decide on the matter in the coming weeks, with Malmö authorities pointing out that approving large infrastructural projects requires environmental studies.
Municipal manager Andreas Norbrant reminded that Malmö and Copenhagen have been examining the possibility for more than a decade and pointed out that metro integration could mean a lot for the two cities and the broader region.
He noted that, if Copenhagen greenlights the project, Danish authorities will include it in their future planning. Norbrant concluded that Swedish approval would be a starting point for implementing the project after more than 10 years of consideration.
The proposed metro connection would improve sustainability of transport between Copenhagen and Malmö, making freight transport and commuting between the cities greener.
