Leipzig replaces former processing plant with a new school complex
Leipzig has started construction of a new school complex in place of a former wood processing plant.
Headed by Lord Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung, city authorities stressed the importance of building new schools to meet the demands of the residents.
Deputy Mayor for urban development and construction Thomas Dienberg laid the foundation stone with Juliane Baron, the headmistress of the high school that had already opened.
The new complex will accommodate approximately 1,120 students and boast outdoor sports facilities and a large sports hall.
City authorities noted that capacity will be expanded to 1,400 as needed and added that the sports hall will have spectator capacity or nearly 200, which will make it possible to hold competitions there.
Dienberg pointed out that the project is an important part of Leipzig’s efforts to modernise the city’s schools, noting that it is worth approximately EUR 55.1 million, of which Leipzig received roughly 13 million as subsidies. The new building should be opened at the start of the 2024/2025 school year.
Baron noted that future pupils are very excited about the construction of their new school, “which they can follow every day from next door.”
She concluded that the local community will benefit from the new school complex, stressing the importance of quality education.
