Leipzig launches urban projects to boost green recovery

Leipzig has presented 22 urban development projects aimed at helping businesses and residents in the city centre recover from the coronavirus crisis.

Headed by Lord Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung, city authorities pointed out that the projects are financed through the federal programme Sustainable Inner Cities and Centres.

The projects are intended to improve quality of life in the city and make it more diverse while promoting sustainability and environmental protection.

One of the projects is the creation of a zero-waste centre for repair and sale of appliances and other products with the aim of minimising waste and consumption of resources.

The centre is to host artists, craftsmen, designers and retailers who will work on products that come from recycling centres and depots, among other.

As part of the project, consumers will have an opportunity to take part in workshops and courses under the motto Reduce, Repair, Rethink, which will have positive economic and societal effects.

City authorities announced the launch of the project for 2024 and stressed that the project will help Leipzig to become a “zero waste city” and achieve environmental targets.

Other planned projects focus on making locally made products more accessible, increasing cultural dialogue, stepping up environmental protection and making the city greener, among other.
