Leipzig announces EUR 1.2 billion worth of new projects for 2023
Leipzig has announced projects worth roughly EUR 1.2 billion to be implemented this year.
Headed by Lord Mayor of Leipzig Burkhard Jung, city authorities pointed out that the package of projects focuses on renewable energy, transport and construction of schools and kindergartens.
Jung noted that the coronavirus crisis slowed down Leipzig, but stressed that the city continued to grow “both demographically and economically.”
He pointed out that education and the green push remain Leipzig’s top priorities, which is reflected in announced investments and in line with long-term plans.
Approximately EUR 187 million will go towards renewable energy projects that municipal utilities are planning, which will cut CO2 emissions from district heating and lower overall emissions by developing renewables.
Roughly EUR 220 million will go towards construction of schools, up from about 112 million in 2022, with city authorities stressing that Leipzig continues to invest in education.
The city will invest approximately EUR 90 million in sustainable transport and expansion of infrastructure to promote it.
City authorities pointed out that Leipzig will invest roughly EUR 456 million this year, while its companies will invest additional 700 million or so, bringing the total to nearly 1.2 billion.
Jung concluded that Leipzig’s plan includes “a sustainable and, in the medium term, climate-neutral energy supply as well as investments in future transport that puts people first.”
