Florence incentivizes public transport use to tackle air pollution

News

Florence has announced an initiative to encourage the use of public transport to reduce smog and improve air quality.

Headed by Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella, city authorities pointed out that price of season tickets for high school students and new holders will be symbolic to encourage use of trams, buses and trains.

At the same time, prices for old subscribers will be cut 15%, with Florence estimating that approximately 15,000 new discounts will be provided to students, additional 8,000 or so to new season ticket holders and roughly 20,000 to old subscribers.

Price for students and new users will stand at EUR 50, with the municipality to cover the remainder.

City authorities noted that residents can submit their applications online to receive discount codes which they can use to buy season tickets, stressing that the application process will start in September this year.

Florence warned that use of season tickets will be tracked and pointed out that users will have to register at least 30 trips by the end of the year to stay eligible for further discounts.

Users can register up to two trips per day, which the IF app will track and display in a dedicated section.

City authorities noted that the initiative will have positive economic and environmental effects as it will help families and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
