Estonia’s digitized education system
Estonia is a country with a rich touristic offer: from medieval cities to the nearby islands, but it is also very attractive because of its excellent education system. Furthermore, Estonia is one of the world’s most digitized countries with over 62% of Estonians who have at least basic digital skills.
The country has one of the fastest-growing economies in the EU and Estonia’s “e-society” is the nation’s digital infrastructure that pioneers e-government systems which include electronic ID cards, e-schools, e-health, and digitized educational system which is very advanced.
Estonia is an innovative e-state that is always thriving for new technologies and looking to the future. Because of this digitalization, Estonia has one of the world’s best education systems and is one of the role models for education.
According to the PISA tests results from 2018, Estonia’s basic education was ranked among the strongest in the world and the absolute best in Europe for the country’s education system. Globally, Estonian students ranked 4th in science, 5th in reading and 8th in math.
PISA, the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment, measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics, and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.
During the coronavirus pandemic, Estonia showed its strength with a rapid switch to online teaching methods. While most countries had some serious problems in switching to this online education system, Estonia didn’t have any problems because 99% of schools had already been using some type of e-solutions even prior to the pandemic.
The country of Estonia believes in equal access to technology for creating a better education system which is why all students have access to technology and information regardless of their ethnicity, socio-economic status, age, physical ability or any other qualification.
All Estonian students can learn from their smart devices, no matter where they are, as long as they have a good internet connection.
Every Estonian student, no matter of the study level, can join E-schoolbag, the portal which was created for digital learning materials. It helps the students find the educational materials they need that are located in different digital tools. This way, students can get access to different information much faster and easier.
This helpful search engine contains materials for different levels of education such as basic, general, and vocational.
Estonian schools also use Moodle, an online platform for online learning that enables students to enter different online courses, add assignments, and it also helps the teachers to keep an eye on students’ progress. It also allows teachers to communicate with the students and encourage further communication between them via forums and discussions.
With its digitized education system, Estonian citizens are gaining knowledge in much more exciting and interesting way of learning which also helps them become more creative and more interested in many different topics.
