Dortmund’s waste management embraces electric vehicles for a cleaner future
Dortmund’s waste management company EDG has expanded its fleet of electric vehicles, noting that the move will lower greenhouse gas emissions as well as noise.
City authorities headed by Lord Mayor of Dortmund Thomas Westphal pointed out that the company purchased four street sweepers and three small electric trucks.
EDG reminded that it took advantage of federal funding opportunities, pointing to high cost of environmentally friendly.
Company management reaffirmed its commitment to replacing old vehicles with electric ones as part of broader efforts to cut emissions and protect the environment.
According to EDG’s estimates, the purchase of four electric street sweepers will lower CO2 emissions approximately 100 tonnes annually, with the company stressing that the move will also reduce noise.
Cost of the four sweepers stands at roughly EUR 1.2 million, of which federal subsidies covered 624,000.
City authorities pointed out that noise emissions are low enough to allow operation of new sweepers at night and will have positive effects on drivers.
Cost of new electric trucks stands at nearly EUR 200,000, with EDG noting that federal subsidies covered nearly 80,000. The company pointed out that the trucks are compact and manoeuvrable, which makes them suitable for emptying litter bins in narrow and crowded streets.
