Copenhagen started consultation with residents and experts to protect culturally important buildings.

Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Hæstorp Andersen stressed the importance of preserving “the city’s soul while we develop the city,” noting that consultations will help to identify buildings worth protecting.

She concluded that city authorities want to prevent “local pearls that tell something about the city’s history” from being torn down.

Copenhagen reminded that the number of debates around planned demolition of buildings has increased in recent years, which prompted city authorities to consult with residents and experts with a view to protect important buildings.

The Copenhagen administration noted that, while experts may not see great value in some buildings, they may be of significant importance to the residents.

Councillor for technology and the environment Line Barfod pointed out that Copenhagen “must become better at looking after our historic buildings and our cultural environments.”

She added that city authorities should look for ways to repurpose important old buildings rather than tear them down and develop Copenhagen with consideration.

“We must preserve buildings to a much greater extent – to preserve the city’s soul, but also because it is more sustainable… both in relation to climate and resource consumption,” Barfod concluded.

Residents flagged 217 buildings for conservation, with the expert panel to review the nominations and submit its recommendations to city authorities.
