Copenhagen is to launch the Year of Architecture on 17 January, with the city noting that it has been named the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture.

Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Hæstorp Andersen is to attend the launch with other city officials and representatives from UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA).

“I am proud that Copenhagen has been named world capital of architecture,” she noted and added “it is a completely unique window to show the world what we can do in architecture, urban development and sustainability, and it is an important occasion for dialogue about the development of the capital of the future.”

She stressed the importance of tackling challenges including climate change, sea level rise and lack of housing, among other. “With over 300 activities during the Year of Architecture, I look forward to exciting conversations about the city’s development together with Copenhageners and guests from abroad,” Hæstorp Andersen concluded.

Councillor for Technology and Environment Line Barfod added “it will be an exciting year, where we will gather around both the beautiful and special things that Copenhagen’s architecture has to offer.”

She stressed the importance of protecting biodiversity, investing in renewable energy, sorting waste and building affordable housing.

City authorities noted that Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, will attend the Year of Architecture launch.
