Copenhagen is on track to replace all buses with zero-emission vehicles
Copenhagen is on the path to transition to emissions-free buses by 2025, with efforts underway to decarbonise the last five bus lines.
Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Hæstorp Andersen pointed out that she is proud the city has “taken a decisive step towards clean and green bus traffic.”
She pointed out that the transition will have many positive effects on quality of life in the city, stressing that electric buses are not as noisy and do not pollute the air.
Copenhagen authorities decided in 2019 to make all bus lines financed by the municipality emissions-free by 2025, reminding that 13 bus lines have been decarbonised and a total of 22 will be by the end of the year.
The city pointed out that conversion of its bus fleet to zero emissions will cut CO2 emissions by approximately 17,000 tonnes per year.
As existing contracts for some municipal bus lines run beyond 2025, Copenhagen decided to terminate the agreements before they expire in order to reach the emissions-free target. The companies in question will receive compensation for early termination of contracts.
City authorities pointed out that the plan to transition away from fossil fuels in public transport is in line with the green push and Copenhagen’s environmental goals, and will be financed in part through the municipality’s climate fund.
