Community-driven urban planning promotes walkability in Nuremberg

Nuremberg has invited residents to take part in the planning of urban development projects focused on expansion of pedestrian areas.

Headed by Lord Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König, city authorities reminded that focus of urban development was on public transport and cycling, noting that it is shifting to pedestrian traffic.

Nuremberg’s mobility strategy from 2021 includes plans to expand pedestrian zones and build “pedestrian-friendly districts.”

City authorities invited residents to take part in the planning and send their suggestions for improving their neighbourhoods.

Resident participation projects in Rennweg and Wöhrd districts will start on 9 May with a kick-off event at the St. Bartholomäus community hall.

Nuremberg pointed out that the majority of public areas are reserved for cars, stressing that negative effects of the growing number of cars in the city can no longer be addressed in an environmentally friendly manner.

For this purpose, city authorities adopted a pedestrian traffic strategy last year, noting that it will help to reduce the number of accidents, improve quality of life in Nuremberg and have positive environmental effects.

The strategy is in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as it will improve accessibility and help disabled people to move around the city.
