Cologne extends its programme aiming to limit city’s pigeon population
Cologne has extended its programme aimed at controlling the pigeon population in cooperation with initiatives.
The city launched the programme under Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker in 2019 and first extended it in 2021.
City authorities reminded that the programme includes construction and management of dovecotes, stressing that suitable locations for these structures are largely privately owned.
This is why the city cooperates with the Deutsche Bahn national railway company and the University of Cologne, among other private entities, which have suitable locations at their disposal.
Cologne stressed that the programme is animal-friendly and helps to keep the pigeon population in check.
Cologne provides the birds that stay at the dovecotes with species-appropriate feed and replaces the eggs with plaster ones, which helps to limit the population in the long term.
Any pigeons that are injured or sick are nursed back to health under veterinary supervision.
City authorities pointed out that the work is largely carried out by volunteers under professional supervision, commending them for their commitment and dedication.
Cologne authorities pointed out that the latest draft proposal to extend the programme has been submitted to relevant committees for approval.
