Cologne cycling promotion programmes raise number of cyclists
Cologne has presented the results of its cycling promotion programmes, noting that the number of cyclists in the city increased approximately 9% in 2022.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker pointed out that permanent counting points recorded roughly 16.6 million cyclists last year.
Cologne reminded that promotion of cycling is an important part of its mobility plan, which includes construction of new cycle paths and other infrastructure.
Last year, counting points recorded an average of 5,500 cyclists per day on Venloer Street for an annual total of roughly two million, followed by Zülpicher Street with about 1.8 million cyclists and Deutzer Street with approximately 1.7 million.
Annual increase in cycling on Zülpicher Street stood at 18.4% last year, followed by Neumarkt with 17.3%, which was partly due to relaxation of health restrictions that allowed shops to reopen and university lectures to resume.
City authorities pointed out that mild weather in spring in autumn allowed more people to cycle this year and had a positive effect on overall 2022 figures.
Counting points in Bonner and Venloer streets showed annual decline of motor vehicle traffic of 7.2%, with Cologne noting that new speed reductions, reopening of the nearby Vogelsanger Street and the construction site on Bonner Street need to be taken into account.
