Cologne continues to build new schools
Cologne is continuing to build new schools and temporary locations to facilitate the move.
Headed by Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker, city authorities noted that the school expansion and modernisation project continues despite obstacles.
Work on the project in Venloer Wall has resumed after a delay of nearly one and a half years due to complaints about planned felling of trees.
As part of the project, several trees will be felled to make room for the new building, with city authorities stressing that the trees will be replaced and additional ones planted.
In addition, protection of the nearby green belt will be improved and the project will be overseen by external ecological supervisors.
Three more schools are to be renovated by the second quarter of 2024, with city authorities pointing out that new IT equipment will be installed and classrooms modernised to facilitate learning.
New temporary schools will be modular structures, designed for a long service life and well suited for temporary use until new schools are completed.
The modular construction method will allow the projects to be carried out quickly as parts of the building will be pre-fabricated off site, allowing other construction work to continue unimpeded.
City authorities pointed out that off-site construction will be unaffected by weather conditions, which will additionally speed up the process.
