Bordeaux crowned as France’s greenest city by Le Parisien
French daily Le Parisien recognised Bordeaux as the greenest of 444 cities and towns in France.
Mayor of Bordeaux Pierre Hurmic pointed out that the award presents “recognition of Bordeaux – its residents, associations, companies and public authorities that together make it possible to change course.”
He added that the award encourages Bordeaux to step up its environmental efforts and become more sustainable, concluding that the city still has a long way to go.
City authorities pointed out that cities and towns were evaluated on objective and quantifiable criteria related to mobility, urban planning, housing and environmental protection, among other.
Roughly 12% of residents cycle as their main mode of transport, with the figure exceeding 20% in some districts. Cycling in Bordeaux has increased approximately 20% between 2020 and 2022, while cycling infrastructure has expanded roughly 8%.
Bordeaux boasts low greenhouse gas emissions thanks to its energy-efficient buildings and eco-districts, but has only 20 square metres of public green spaces per resident, which is below the average of the 50 largest cities in France.
City authorities reminded that Bordeaux adopted plans to expand green areas and build new ones in 2021 and concluded that it will continue to implement greening projects in the coming years.
