Bolstering climate action in Nuremberg with new environmental plans
Nuremberg has released a report on its climate protection activities and announced new environmental protection plans.
Headed by Lord Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König, city authorities noted that the administration and city-owned companies implemented more than 270 small and large projects to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Along with a list of measures, Nuremberg provided an overview of its climate protection goals, relevant changes to regulations and allocation of municipal funds.
The city noted there is still room for improvement as Nuremberg has launched few energy efficiency projects for residential buildings and does not have a support programme for climate protection measures.
City authorities reminded that a citizens’ initiative gathered more than 13,000 signatures last year calling for a new environmental protection plan and annual reports on implemented measures.
At the end of 2022, the city council passed a package of measures, including plans to release annual progress reports and hire an external service provider to draw up an integrated climate protection concept.
Nuremberg predicted that development of the new climate protection concept will start in 2024 and expressed hope that residents will be involved in the process.
The city noted that it is preparing to find an experienced service provider and concluded that the new concept will help it to reach environmental protection targets.
