Aalborg-Copenhagen may become Denmark’s first green domestic air route
The air connection between the Danish cities of Aalborg and Copenhagen may soon become Denmark’s first green domestic air route, TV2 Nord reported.
Mayor of Aalborg Thomas Kastrup-Larsen stated on social media: ‘’It’s great that we’re a big step closer to a completely green domestic air route between Aalborg and Copenhagen. There is strong support for the project from both Aalborg Airport and Aalborg University. We hope to reach the goal of being Denmark’s first green domestic route.’’
Denmark recently declared that it would join a select group of nearby nations in banning all domestic aircraft flights fueled by fossil fuels by the year 2030. If this ambitious aim was accomplished, air travel between Danish cities would be substantially more environmentally friendly than it is right now in just 8 years time.
This week, a major step in that direction was made. A public subsidy program called the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP) announced that it will provide DKK 194.5 million (more than 26 million euro) in support for 26 energy projects.
One of them is eSAF-AAL, a project that would provide environmentally friendly aviation fuel. The objective is to lay the technical groundwork for the construction of a large-scale factory in Aalborg that will be able to produce 10,000 tonnes of aviation fuel annually starting in 2025 for the first domestic green route.
Aalborg Airport and Aalborg University are both included in the plan, and both are expected to be extremely beneficial to the project. The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings placed Aalborg University sixth in the world in 2021 when assessed against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
