Tallinn takes step towards sustainability with reusable packaging pilot

Tallinn has launched a reusable packaging pilot project in preparation for the ban on disposable tableware that comes into effect in June this year.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Tallinn Mihhail Kõlvart leased seven locations to Ringo Eco to collect reusable packaging in the Old Town.

The pilot project is aimed at assessing residents’ willingness to participate and any problems with the collections and reuse model, and will last one month.

Deputy Mayor Joosep Vimm noted that the project is an important step on the way to sustainability and expressed belief that cooperation with Ringo Eco will make it easy and convenient for residents to switch to reusable packaging and tableware.

He invited other companies to propose projects and concluded that “the transition to a circular economy can only be achieved through the cooperation of the city, the state and entrepreneurs.”

City authorities reminded that only reusable containers and tableware will be allowed for serving food and drinks in Tallinn from 1 June 2023, adding that 94 establishments in Tallinn have joined the project.

Disposable straws and cocktail decorations will still be allowed if they do not contain any plastic.

City authorities stressed that the move is aimed at protecting the environment, cutting waste generation and creating demand for reuse systems.
