Hamburg approves first hydrogen taxis as part of its green mobility strategy
Hamburg has approved the first 25 hydrogen taxis to operate in the city as part of its green mobility strategy.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher pointed out that 350 environmentally friendly taxis have been licensed thus far.
The new hydrogen-powered taxis started operating this year, with Hamburg pointing out that their purchase was financially supported through the Taxi of the Future project.
City authorities reminded that, under new environmental rules, only emission-free taxis will be allowed to operate in the city from 2025, which is why Hamburg is supporting the industry in the transition towards emission-free vehicles.
As part of the transition, Hamburg is planning to expand its charging and refilling infrastructure to support the growing number of hydrogen-powered and electric vehicles.
Taxi companies stressed the importance of building new infrastructure and making hydrogen-powered vehicles bookable via apps.
City authorities reminded that Hamburg set ambitious environmental goals and stressed the importance of curbing greenhouse gas emissions, reiterating that the taxi sector is to become emission-free by 2025.
Hamburg has been cooperating with the taxi sector through the Future Taxi project launched in April 2021 and is co-financing the sector’s transition away from fossil fuels in cooperation with the state.
