Valencia announces green urban development project

Valencia has announced a green urban development project to mitigate negative effects of traffic on noise and air pollution.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Valencia Joan Ribó pointed out that the city will change spatial plans to allow redevelopment of Ausiàs March Avenue, one of the busiest roads in the city.

As part of the plan, green areas will be moved closer to the houses and pedestrian areas will be widened to limit noise and particulate pollution.

Councillor for urban development Sandra Gómez pointed out that the city wants to “combat the effects of climate change and become more resilient to rising temperatures,” which the project will contribute to.

She noted that a study published recently estimates that heat waves add approximately 900 deaths per year in large cities in Spain, largely due to lack of trees.

“We want to turn this around,” Gómez stated and reminded that Valencia will become the European Green Capital in 2024 because it continues to implement projects like the one in Ausiàs March Avenue.

The project shows that “living near a large avenue does not have to condemn people to live surrounded by noise and air pollution, which has serious consequences on health,” she continued and concluded that Valencia will continue to implement innovative solutions to improve quality of life in the city.
