Copenhagen named World Capital of Architecture 2023 by UNESCO
Copenhagen is the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2023 and is planning events throughout the year.
Speaking at the launch event, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Sophie Hæstorp Andersen stressed “I am proud that Copenhagen has been named Capital of Architecture.”
She pointed out that it presents an opportunity to “show the world what we can do in architecture, urban development and sustainability, and it is an important occasion for dialogue about the development of the capital of the future.”
Andersen noted that that city authorities are planning more than 300 events in the Year of Architecture and added that she is excited to take part in and hear conversations about development of Copenhagen.
She stressed the importance of tackling “the great challenges of the time together – climate change, rising water levels, the lack of housing” and more.
Councillor for Technology and Environment Line Barfod noted that “architecture is much more than just beautiful buildings… it is also part of the solution to the challenges of climate crisis, housing shortage and social distortion that our city faces.”
Barfod concluded that she is looking forward to exchanges with international guests and discussion on ways “to create an even better capital that is accessible to everyone.”
The year will kick off with exhibitions in Copenhagen’s museums with a focus on Danish architecture from the Viking Age onwards, with city authorities stressing that events will be inclusive and accessible.
Besides exhibitions, Copenhagen will organise roundtables, workshops, debates, podcasts and other content focused on architecture, with city authorities pointing out that the full list is available online.
