Valencia absorbs EU funds to build new bike lanes
Valencia has absorbed EU funds to expand its cycling infrastructure, noting that the project is worth some EUR 11.4 million of which the EU provided more than 5.7 million.
Under Mayor of Valencia Joan Ribó, the city launched the project in 2015 and is to complete it this year noting that the EU is covering approximately half of the cost.
Councillor for sustainable mobility Giuseppe Grezzi pointed out that Valencia has 187.4 kilometres of cycling paths, up from about 64 kilometres in 2015.
He noted that almost 200 kilometres of cycling paths will be completed by the end of the project, stressing that Valencia is dedicated to sustainable mobility projects.
Grezzi reminded that Valencia has been named the EU Green Capital of 2024, which shows that the city has become an example to be followed on the EU level.
He concluded that the city administration wants to make Valencia “a healthier, more prosperous, safer, more accessible and more efficient city.”
City authorities pointed out that implementation of Valencia’s cycling plan will encourage cycling over the use of motorised transport and result in estimated energy savings of 21%.
Valencia noted that it submitted a new plan for expansion of cycling infrastructure to the EU, proposing to build additional 9.6 kilometres of cycling paths for approximately EUR 4.1 million.
