Naples has launched a project to donate toys and books to poor children and is calling for donations.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi pointed out that many toy and book stores have joined the initiative and stressed that it is open to anyone who wants to donate.

Naples will coordinate donation efforts and make sure that toys and books are delivered to recipients through local educational institutions and other bodies.

City councillors Chiara Marciani and Luca Trapanese pointed out that departments of youth and social policies promote the solidarity initiative.

“Christmas is the period of the year in which small gestures of solidarity can give peace and serenity even to those who are experiencing a difficult moment, but also allow those who give a toy to enjoy the Christmas spirit,” Marciani pointed out.

She added that the initiative is part of city authorities’ efforts “to make this holiday a moment of joy and sharing, and provide a sense of union and community.”

Trapanese noted that many families are in a difficult position due to negative economic trends.

“For them and for their children it is Christmas all the same,” he added and stressed that it is Naples’ duty to make it possible for all residents to enjoy the magic of holidays.

Trapanese called on those who can to help the city ensure a happier Christmas for children in need.
