Rennes has announced plans to modernise the Champ-Jacquet Square and its surroundings for EUR 4 million.

Headed by Mayor of Rennes Nathalie Appéré, city authorities noted that the project will transform the square into a central area of Rennes.

Besides the square, the project includes modernisation of nearby streets, with Rennes stressing that the area will be made greener and better adapted for cyclists and pedestrians.

The new urban design will take into account the topography of the area and respect cultural heritage including buildings and statues, among other.

City authorities pointed out that the project will make it easier to organise events in the area and allow flexibility in the use of public spaces.

As part of the project, Rennes will plant new trees along streets, around the nearby high school, in front of the local gallery and in other locations.

In addition, roads will be redesigned to make them compliant with rules on accessibility for handicapped people and bring them in line with the new traffic plan. Sidewalks will be widened to make the area more cyclist and pedestrian-friendly.

Rennes authorities reminded that the city held consultations with residents in 2018 to decide on development of the city centre, stressing that their suggestions have been incorporated into the plan.
