Dortmund allots free parking spaces for car-sharing purposes

Dortmund announced plans to support car-sharing with the aim of making transport more environmentally friendly. Under Lord Mayor of Dortmund Thomas Westphal, the city marked 24 parking spaces in the city for car-sharing use, stressing that parking in these spaces is free.

Head of Dortmund mobility planning Andreas Meißner pointed out that car-sharing can replace private ownership and stressed “fewer cars make the streets more liveable.”

The lion’s share of the 24 parking spaces are in the city centre, with Dortmund authorities stressing that all vehicles of all car-sharing providers can be parked there free of charge. The city stressed the importance of marking such vehicles clearly with a sticker and pointed out that parking is free only with an official sticker.

The parking spaces are marked with a special traffic sign indicating that the spaces are reserved for car-sharing vehicles. Other vehicles parked there will be considered as parked illegally.

The signs were introduced in 2021, but traffic police only issued warnings to drivers who parked in the reserved spaces illegally.

Meißner stressed that parking rules are clear and reiterated that only car-sharing vehicles may park in the spaces reserved for them. “All other drivers without a car-sharing vehicle will be fined or even towed away,” he concluded.

Dortmund authorities reminded that the first vehicle was towed away for illegal parking in spaces reserved for car-sharing earlier this year.
