Stockholm, besides being the capital city of Sweden and the economic centre of Scandinavia, is one of the most successful metropolitan areas in Europe thanks to its commitment to sustainability and its attractiveness to talent and investment. It is also one of the most rapidly growing city regions in Europe and the demand from investors is huge. It is also home to some of Europe’s fastest-growing start-ups and Stockholm has the world’s most unicorns per capita after Silicon Valley.

Mayor of Stockholm Anna König Jerlmyr said via social media: “In recent years, Stockholm has earned the reputation of being a ‘unicorn factory’. Sweden’s capital claims to have produced more billion-dollar start-ups per capita than any other region outside of Silicon Valley, having produced the likes of Spotify, Klarna and Skype”. Sweden is also one of the world’s most gender-equal nations. But the lack of women in the technology industry remains an issue everywhere.

Related to this, mayor König Jerlmyr also added: “I want to see half of Stockholms unicorns to be founded by women within a decade. I believe there is no better place than Stockholm for talented women to thrive”.

Mayor König Jerlmyr is also known for the fact that she is always trying to meet women entrepreneurs and she is very active in the Women in Tech movement, a non-profit organization supported by more than 20 high-profiled companies, who work together to break new ground and set the scene for a new way of working with diversity and inclusion.

Therefore, as the mayor said, “the future of women in tech is in Stockholm”.
