Utrecht starts trial period for electric shared cargo bikes

Utrecht residents will be able to use an electric shared cargo bike from next spring. The municipality is starting a partnership with the Cargoroo company for a two-year trial with 100 e-cargo bikes. From the spring, Cargoroo will place the e-shared cargo bikes throughout the city, depending on the enthusiasm in the various neighborhoods. The trial is linked to a study that should provide insight into the potential of the e-shared cargo bikes in making transport in Utrecht more sustainable.

Utrecht sees the e-shared cargo bikes as a healthy and sustainable alternative to short car journeys. An e-shared cargo bike is useful for groceries, large purchases or for picking up the children from school. The e-shared cargo bikes will be placed in a fixed place on the street. In the upcoming months, Cargoroo will investigate together with the municipality which locations are most suitable for this. The enthusiasm among residents plays an important role in this. This autumn, Cargoroo will, among other things, advertise through social media and digital neighborhood newsletters.

The trial is in line with Utrecht’s policy to stimulate various modes of shared transport. If more people choose to share means of transport, the air will remain clean and the street quiet and safe; the fewer cars and bicycles on the street, the more space for greenery or play areas, for example. Read more about shared transport in Utrecht at www.utrecht.nl/deelt .
