Paris’s urban transformation: from parking spaces to tree-lined streets

Paris has planted more than 25,000 trees in the last 6 months, with more than 63,500 trees planted since 2020.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo pointed out that new greenery was planted to prepare Paris for climate challenges of tomorrow and improve quality of life.

Paris mobilised more than 250 professionals to plant the trees and other greenery in suitable locations across the city.

The pace of planting trees along streets has more than doubled this year thanks to new local environmental initiatives, with a focus on areas around schools.

City authorities reminded that the Sarah-Monod Square was made greener after consultations with residents, who wanted less traffic and more trees to be planted. The move will help to improve air quality and lower particulate and noise pollution as well as reduce the heat island effect.

Paris reiterated that it planted more than 63,500 trees since 2020 to combat the effects of climate change and improve biodiversity, stressing that the focus is on local and resilient species.

The Paris ring road is gradually transformed into a peaceful urban boulevard, with city authorities reminding that nearly 30,000 trees have been planted along it.

Additional 14,000 trees or so have been planted in central Paris and more than 19,000 have been planted in green areas and woods.

Paris authorities pointed out that roughly 6,000 parking spaces have been replaced with green areas and infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
