New apartments and day-care centre to boost quality of life in Essen

Essen is implementing a public housing project in Markscheide as part of broader housing investments worth some EUR 6.5 million.

Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen visited the construction site, noting that he is happy to see the progress.

He reminded that demand for housing in Essen is rising and stressed the importance of building more public housing.

“The number of publicly subsidised apartments in Essen has more than halved in the past 20 years,” he warned and added that demand remains high as the city continues to grow.

The new apartment building with 15 publicly funded apartments is under construction on the site of the former school in Markscheide. Besides apartments, a new day-care centre will be built to meet the needs of the residents.

Kufen stressed that the project will help to develop the neighbourhood and improve quality of life, which is in line with the city’s urban development plans and presents continuation of Essen’s efforts in recent years.

He congratulated everyone involved in the project on the progress made thus far and expressed hope that new tenants will feel at home in the new building.

Apartments are to be completed and handed over to tenants at the end of the year, with city authorities noting that construction of the day-care centre is to start in May.
