Essen launches day care centre and elderly housing project
Essen has started construction of a day care centre and hosing for the elderly in Fohnhausen neighbourhood.
City authorities headed by Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen stressed the importance of meeting the needs of young families and caring for the elderly.
Deputy Mayor Rudolf Jelinek visited the construction site to break ground for the new project with other officials.
City authorities reminded that the old block of houses was demolished last year and noted that the new residential complex will be built in its place with a day care centre and apartments for seniors.
“I am pleased that the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the day care centre took place today,” Jelinek noted and added “the special thing about this project is that different generations will be together in one place in the future.”
Pointing out that the day care centre will be right next to 67 apartments for the elderly, he expressed belief that “young and old can benefit from this” and wished everyone involved a lot of success.
The new complex is to be completed by the end of 2024, with city authorities noting that the day care centre will have room for approximately 90 children, including 20 or so under the age of three.
The centre will boast an indoor exercise area as well as an outdoor play area.
