Bratislava gets closer to its green vision with tram network expansion
Bratislava signed a financing agreement with the Slovakian Ministry of Transport and Construction for expansion of its tram network.
Mayor of Bratislava Matúš Vallo pointed out “the extension of the tram line to the end of Petržalka is one of the most important transport projects for us.”
He added that Bratislava is doing everything it can to push the project forward and noted that he is happy it received the support of the government and EU funds.
Minister of Transport and Construction Andrej Doležal pointed out that the government supports the green push and added that transformation of public transport is an important part of it.
“I believe that construction will pick up pace and the first passengers will travel on the new line next year,” he predicted.
Earthworks are underway and, according to plans, the line will be opened in 2024, before the end of the construction phase.
City authorities pointed out that the EU will finance the project with EUR 86 million, stressing that it includes work on bridges, roads and the energy grid, among other.
The project will be largely financed from the EU Cohesion Fund, with city authorities pointing out that work carried out in 2024 will be financed from the new programming period.
Besides construction of new infrastructure, the project requires some existing infrastructure to be moved, including parts of optical and natural gas networks.
