Banning cigarette use on Barcelona beaches

The city of Barcelona, led by mayor Ada Colau, decided to ban cigarettes on all the beaches in the city. This decision was made after a pilot project last year when smoking was banned on four of the city’s 10 local beaches.

This ban will start in July 2022, and they aim to offer healthier communal living areas in the city, with less waste. This is the project that will improve the environment but it will also make the city of Barcelona less polluted and much cleaner.

Cigarette butts seem to be everywhere, scattered along with green spaces, sidewalks, roadsides, beaches and waterways. Cigarettes are the most littered item on earth.

Cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals such as arsenic. By being toasted, they have a terrible impact on the environment, and can even contaminate water. The toxic exposure can poison fish, as well as animals who eat cigarette butts.

Cigarettes are not biodegradable, and 98% of cigarette filters are made of plastic fibers that are tightly packed together, which leads to an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of cigarette butts winding up as toxic trash every year.

Smoking is also hazardous to the health of innocent people who don’t even smoke, which is why this decision is very important so that non-smokers don’t have to experience the negative effects of tobacco.

By banning cigarette use at all city beaches, Barcelona will become much greener than it is now, and there would also be fewer pesticides and chemicals causing soil and water pollution.

By implementing this ban, there would probably be more people who are encouraged to quit smoking which would also have positive effects on people’s health. (photo credit: Steven Pahel/Unsplash)
