Mayor Tomislav Tomašević
Biography
Tomislav Tomašević is a Croatian politician, activist, environmentalist and mayor of Zagreb since 2021. He was born in the Croatian capital in 1982.
Mayor of Zagreb obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Zagreb in 2006 and completed a postgraduate of environment, society, and development from the University of Cambridge in 2013.
He received several awards and scholarships, including the Marshall Memorial Fellowship, Chevening Fellowship, and Cambridge Overseas Trust Fellowship.
Since he took over the mayor's office, Tomašević has been fighting for society with more solidarity and for a more transparent Zagreb. He has also put much effort into the reconstruction of the city after the big earthquake in 2020 and wants to improve the public procurement system.
Mayor of Zagreb's goal is to make the city more sustainable by putting a special focus on installing the solar power panels on the roofs of houses and buildings, implementing the energy efficiency measures, and also on introducing the principles of the circular economy. Furthermore, mayor of Zagreb focuses on waste and water management, mobility and decentralization. Since he has become mayor of Zagreb, Tomašević introduced a new bulky waste management system that should save Croatia’s capital. This new bulky waste management system will bring annual savings sufficient for the construction of one kindergarten: it will save EUR 4.4 million a year which is enough to construct one kindergarten for about 200 children.
Tomašević is a mayor who deeply cares about the protection of nature, gender equality and fight against war and nationalism. (photo credit: Zagreb official website)
