Axel Josefson

Axel Josefson is a Swedish politician who has been serving as mayor of Gothenburg since January 2019. One of his main priorities is making Sweden’s second-largest city more sustainable and green. Sweden is generally known for being one of the leaders in urban climate transition in Europe. Gothenburg, as one of its largest and most important cities, plays a very significant role in this process. The first Climate City Contract in Europe was signed by the political leadership of nine Swedish cities, including Gothenburg, in December 2020. This was a watershed moment for Europe as it demonstrated that cities can and must take the lead in the fight against climate change. Climate City Contract 2030, which was signed during European Viable Cities Day, commits cities to speed up the transition to climate neutrality and increased sustainability.  For mayor Josefson and the city of Gothenburg, climate protection has a very special place, which is why this Swedish city is constantly taking new steps towards becoming greener, smarter and more sustainable. This is also reflected in the numerous awards and recognitions the city has received in recent years. Gothenburg was named the 2020 European Capital of Smart Tourism by the European Commission, alongside the Spanish city of Malaga. The city was praised for its high level of digitalization and outstanding efforts in the field of urban transportation, among other things. Furthermore, Gothenburg also received the Smart Tourism Award in the category of sustainability. Gothenburg aspires to be a climate-neutral city by 2030 and is actively working towards achieving this goal. Gothenburg Green City Zone is a place where new technology for vehicles and infrastructure is tested with the goal of achieving emission-free transportation by 2030. It is just one of the examples which portray the city’s strong will to inspire others and take the lead against climate change. Due to the excellent work of mayor Josefson, Gothenburg is at the forefront of sustainable urban planning. The city has earned the reputation of being one of Europe's greenest and most sustainable cities and is now moving even faster toward its climate goals. (photo credit: Flickr)
