Biography
John Jorritsma is a Dutch politician who has been serving as the Mayor of Eindhoven since September 2016. In recent years, this Dutch city managed to establish the reputation of one the most innovative cities not only in the Netherlands but in Europe. Ever since he took the mayor's office in Eindhoven, Jorritsma has been working very hard to make the city smart, digital, economically strong, and sustainable.
Eindhoven is one of the Netherlands' strongest economic engines. This is maybe best portrayed by the Brainport region, which is centered around Eindhoven. It is a top technology region with a worldwide reputation for excellence. Thanks to such an attractive business climate that has been established in and around the city, numerous international talents keep coming to Eindhoven, which will likely continue to develop the city and make it an even better place to live and work in.
Eindhoven is home to two world-class educational institutions, which largely contribute to the city's reputation as an innovation hotspot. The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU Eindhoven) has a stellar reputation and consistently ranks very high in global university rankings. In 2021, Mayor Jorritsma met with European Commissioner for innovation, science, and education Mariya Gabriel. Brainport was selected as a location of Gabriel’s first work visit to the Netherlands, which proved the importance of this region in the European context. The city and its top-class university were praised for a very strong innovation ecosystem.
Eindhoven’s goal is to make sure that everyone is connected and has access to basic digital equipment. To make sure that everyone can also further develop their digital skills, ''Samen voor Eindhoven'' (Together for Eindhoven) has donated 150 laptops to social institutions throughout Eindhoven in 2020. Jorritsma was also the leader of the Dutch delegation at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona in 2018. He presented some very ambitious plans and stressed that Dutch cities, among which Eindhoven, were the leading cities in the areas of mobility, energy, food, and water technology. According to Innovation Origins, he stated that Dutch cities will redevelop with proven technology into totally different cityscapes in the years to come.
While it remains to be seen what the future will look like in Eindhoven, one thing is certain. Thanks to his game-changing policies, mayor Jorritsma has managed to strengthen Eindhoven’s position as one of Europe’s leading tech hubs which keeps growing every day. (photo credit: wikipedia)
