Biography

Dirk Hilbert is a German politician who is currently serving as mayor of Dresden, the capital city of the German state of Saxony. He has been the mayor since 2015 and his term has so far been very successful.  Among mayor Hilbert’s main priorities is increasing mobility, strengthening the economy and jobs market, providing support to science, and enhancing the cultural offer of Dresden, a city known for its outstanding museums and architectural treasures. Mayor Hilbert is well aware of the importance of sustainable mobility and the numerous benefits it can bring to cities. Therefore, he is very active in this field and, with his brave and innovative approach, makes sure that Dresden can thrive further. In January 2022, a project was launched in Dresden which enabled hospitality industry workers in Dresden to receive training in the field of e-mobility. This way, they were able to expand their knowledge of a topic that is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. During the mayor Hilbert’s term, Dresden made huge progress and truly strengthened its reputation as one of the leading high-tech locations in Europe. The city has a very strong technology base and numerous businesses and start-ups located there are constantly developing innovative solutions which can improve residents’ everyday lives. Thanks to the city’s excellent education institutions, there is also an abundance of talent in Dresden. In June 2021, Vodafone Germany announced the establishment of a 5G research and development facility in Dresden. The new center will focus on research and development in technologies such as 5G and future 6G systems, as well as specific applications in autonomous driving, connected agriculture, chemistry, and construction.  Mayor of Dresden recently also launched an action in which money was collected to help Bad Münstereifel and Swisttal, German towns devastated by 2021 floods. Around 387,000 euro were collected by the residents of Dresden, of which 237,000 euros were planned for the Heimerzheim primary school and the creation of a meeting space for the young people in Swisttal. 150,000 euros were to be spent on the reconstruction of Bad Münstereifel's historic town hall.
