Gergely Karácsony
Biography
Gergely Karácsony is a Hungarian politician, political scientist and mayor of Budapest since 2019. He previously served as a member of the National Assembly from 2010 to 2014 and mayor of Zugló from 2014 to 2019.
Karácsony was elected mayor of Budapest by more than 50% of the votes. This was not just an important victory for the green politician, but for the whole opposition, which after 13 years of political setbacks won not just many districts in Budapest, but also several key cities across the country.
Gergely Karácsony is a dedicated mayor who is constantly trying to transform the Hungarian capital into a green and socially just city. Since the beginning of his mayoral term, mayor Karácsony has been putting efforts to increase Budapest's green areas and combat city pollution. He has started a tree-planting program on the Budapest streets which made the city much greener and less polluted.
One of his goals is to avoid wasting energy in the city by modernizing the heating system and insulation. He also has a strong landscaping program for the city.
His priorities as the mayor include strengthening the social safety net for low-income families, diverting more public money to homeless shelters, and improving public transport. This includes expanding and improving the existing system, ensuring cheaper prices for transportation and making the city more bike-friendly.
At the beginning of his mayoral term, mayor of Budapest has declared a climate emergency in the city, and since then one of his main priorities has been taking necessary actions to fight climate changes.
His goal for Budapest is to become climate neutral by 2050, and he has seen this plan as “the path of the future” that could cut emissions while growing the economy.
This green mayor also wants to improve public transport in the city and this way encourage more people to switch from cars to other transport options such as public transport, cycling and walking. This is why he wants to provide better opportunities for residents to get around the city in an eco-friendly way. (photo credit: Budapest official website)
