Bart De Wever is a Belgian politician who is serving as the mayor of Antwerp since he was first elected in January 2013. Wever is widely considered as Belgium’s most powerful politician because his political success is huge and he has been on Belgium's political scene for a long time. As mayor of Antwerp, which is the largest city in Flanders, De Wever has been encouraging innovation in the city. He has been committed to stimulating ecosystems for innovation by bringing together capital, large and small companies, and specialized knowledge institutions in the fields of digital innovation, sustainable chemistry and creative industries. Since the beginning of his mayoral term, the city has seen many new successes in various social fields such as mobility, health, and safety, which made the city of Antwerp an ideal place for many innovative companies. Antwerp is a port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, and the city's excellent connectivity by land and sea has made it an important economic center for more than five centuries.  The “Port of Antwerp” is the second-largest port in Europe but it is also home to the largest industrial complex in the world which attracts a large number of international investments every year. Under Bart De Wever's mayoral term, the city of Antwerp even made it into fDi Intelligence’s ‘Global Rankings of the Future 2021-2022’ based on both economic potential and great connectivity. In recent years, one of his main focuses was on topics such as security and migration, combined with a strong focus on social benefits in the city of Antwerp. Mayor of Antwerp studied history in Antwerp and Leuven. Before starting his political career, he was an assistant at the university and wrote columns for several newspapers.
